Slideshare Presentations

Slideshare is undoubtedly one of the best places to hunt for presentations on specific topics. I too have utilized the platform to share my own creations – documents and presentations.

However, I’m unimpressed by one aspect of the service. The conversion from PPT and PPTX to Slideshare presentation format is so much wanting. Even if you use the most native fonts and structure with simple images in your PowerPoint format, there’s something that will be skewed, grained, pixelated or displaced – after conversion.

Check this sample recent conversion.

Fonts have unique design and expressive value. Using a particular font for proper impact is a valid need and outlook today. I’m sorry I cannot restrict myself to Arial, Georgia and Times New Roman. There are more stories to be told, more flavors to experience – so, more (and relevant) fonts in the resource kit is natural. The above slide does not even have an image. I’m sure there’s someone who can write an algorithm to make the conversion look almost similar, not what you see above. This quality is really hurting the platform; it’s useful but not usable.

I hope Slideshare guys are working hard to fix this usability issue – which is central to their service.
