Welcome Board

in Just One Other Thing, User Experience

welcome boardAlmost all companies located within a decent premises have a “Welcome Board” as part of their reception or entrance area. I have seen enough boards to be able to put “just one other thing” perspective to this subject. I thank one of my dear friends for this perspective – I was a personal witness to his practical view about the usage of the welcome board.

The board allows alphabet pegs to be inserted so that anyone can easily change the names of guests or special people arriving. Most boards would welcome their guests in this format. In this template, the person in charge changes the date daily and the names if required. When there are no guests, the person removes the names and leaves it blank.

All well? So what’s wrong with that? Well, the employees entering the company technically are not welcomed by this board. A simple yet brilliant idea by my friend made at least one company improvise on the usage of the board.

How?

Removing the letter ‘s’ from “Welcomes” makes it technically correct when there are no names on the display, as in welcoming everyone (unnamed employees too!)

If you like this observation, you’re welcome!
