Hank Rearden, the protagonist in Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, observed that new tools demand new designs and techniques. In the book, he invents a new type of alloy and then works fervently to re-imagine designs in construction such as bridges and buildings. So what can one make of the contemporary tools like iPad? Logic suggests we need to re-imagine our experience that are now enabled by such new platforms.
One product that seems to have successfully adopted to this new platform to deliver a rich experience on iPad is FlipBoard. It is a free application available for iPad and it’s tagline is “your social magazine”.
Imagine reading a magazine which delivers personalised news for you from your friends and family (Facebook or Flickr) or curated content (Twitter or Google Reader). Imagine the seamless experience of being able to flick through the status messages, view videos inline or read shared links without leaving the application. That is what Flipboard delivers. With beautifully laid out pages and excellent use of white space, it is easy on the eye too.
It has an offline capability as well – so sync it up and read it at leisure on your travels.
Flipboard was Apple’s app of the year for 2010. It has received over 2 rounds of funding, the last one valuing it at $ 200 million. With content partnerships with magazines like HBR, Salon, Business Insider and Oprah, Flipboard is marching ahead of any of it closest competitors. Almost worth buying the iPad for.
